NJORD Estonia: Inspiration vs. Infringement: how to protect your creative work and understand “fair use” policies in copyright law?

It is very common in the graphic design landscape that we get our inspiration from someone else's work or replicate the work of a popular designer subject to copyright.

Whether it's a Superman logo in an ad clip, the Queen's photo post on a newsletter, Pippi Longstocking on a show at a Christmas party or Arvo Pärt's soundtrack in a video background - if they do not take copyrights into consideration, or pay royalties to the rights owner, this can easily lead to a litigious litigation. Therefore, it is important to specify in advance which copyrights (both moral and economic) are used.

On April 26, we celebrate World Intellectual Property Day and NJORD Law Firm is hosting a morning seminar, where Attorney at Law Liisi Jürgen, Lawyer Evelin Simer and Legal Assistant Gertrud Sein discuss the issues of theft and plagiarism and give answers to most common questions:

  • Product development and design - How to create a product design that does not violate anyone's rights?
  • How to conclude a contract so that nobody later misuses your work and what are the main points of the contract that should be included?
